This Rocks: Big Bird Learns About Breastfeeding
Just came across this video, circa 1977, via the awesome Birth Ecology Blog. Sadly enough, I think that if Sesame Street tried to show a breastfeeding segment like this today, there would be a big public outcry. Formula feeding moms up in arms, formula companies protesting…sometimes I wonder if we’re going backward instead of forward.
sweeeeet!
backwards, indeed.

There was a wonderful segment on Mr. Rogers that showed breastfeeding. There was even nipple exposure! I saw it on reruns a few years ago. I love(d) that man!
And I love Big Bird.

Isn’t this great? Totally takes me back to childhood seeing an old clip of SS, the way I remember it being. Thanks for sharing this, J.

Awww! That is incredibly sweet. Breastfeeding wasn’t exactly popular in the 70s, but that still made it on the air. So, I’d say “backwards.”

What a sweet clip. I think you’re right—I can’t imagine it on today’s television, but primarily because we have such a weird ethic about “nudity” (as if this really qualifies). I don’t know that formula moms would be up-in-arms, though. It didn’t seem that divisive to me, mostly just sweet. I certainly would have liked having a breastfeeding experience that looked like that with my daughter.

How cool! I can’t believe with all the Sesame Street I watched as a kid that I never saw this one, but I think I missed it.
And like others have said, I guess we are going backwards . . . UGH!

Oh, I love it! Thank you for sharing that. I remember Buffy St. Marie being on Sesame Street a lot. I really liked her.

So sad.
It’s been removed now, and I can’t see even watch it!
